A calm rental return starts before you reach the meeting point. Leaving time to check the car, gather your belongings and review the return conditions makes it easier to finish the booking with a clear record.
Confirm the appointment
Check the agreed return address, date and time. If your plans have changed, tell the rental team before the appointment and ask what arrangements are available. Dropping a key somewhere without agreement can leave uncertainty about when the car was returned and who checked its condition.
If another person will return the vehicle, confirm that arrangement in advance. Give them the booking reference and the agreed handover details rather than relying on a name alone.
Review the car before leaving
- Check the fuel requirement against the agreement.
- Read and photograph the odometer and fuel display.
- Remove personal belongings from door pockets, the boot and under the seats.
- Collect supplied keys, documents and agreed accessories.
- Check the luggage area and any charging or phone cables.
- Report new damage or faults honestly before the final inspection.
Keep any refuelling receipt if it helps explain the fuel level at return. Do not assume that cleaning, missing equipment or fuel charges work the same way across different rental companies.
Keep a useful condition record
Take clear views of the exterior and interior at the agreed return point. If a mark needs recording, include a wider photograph showing which part of the car it belongs to. Avoid photos that expose unrelated people or personal documents.
Ask for confirmation of the return time and any points still awaiting inspection. Where a charge is proposed, request an explanation of the item and how it relates to the booking terms. A completed return record is more useful than a verbal “everything should be fine”.
Follow up on remaining items
Keep the final rental statement, deposit information and correspondence together. If you realise that you left something in the vehicle, contact the team promptly with a description and the reservation number; do not access the vehicle again without permission.
For a GoRush return, confirm your handover arrangements before travelling. This is also the right time to ask about the deposit review or a possible extension.
